Small Groups at Foley United Methodist Church are great places to explore faith, ask questions, study the Bible, and develop life-giving friendships with others. Groups meet weekly at various times and locations around Foley (either at the church or in someone's home). Whether you've been at Foley UMC for years or it's your first time at church, Small Groups are a fantastic way to get connected.
Fall Small Groups at Foley United Methodist Church Begin the first week of September
Fall 2018 Small Groups:
The Human Condition: Contemplation and Transformation by Thomas Keating will be led by Johanna Harbisreitinger. Johanna has been married to Hap for 43 years and they have one daughter, Mackey. They retired to Lower Alabama from Huntsville. Johanna is delighted to be close to Pensacola where she was raised. The author of this study is one of the founders of the Centering Prayer movement and offers a reflection on contemplative prayer, the human search for happiness, and our need to explore the inner world. This group will meet on Tuesdays from 9:30—11:00 a.m. beginning Sept. 4.
The Gospel of Mark by Brad Johnson group will be led by Kevin and Sheryl Fitzjarrald. Kevin and Sheryl have been at FUMC three weeks shy of Pastor Donald. They have been married almost 20 years and have two children and three grandchildren. They are both retired and love going to the beach. This is a continuing study that meets at the Fitzjarrald’s home on Thursdays at 6:00 p.m. You are most welcome to join in as the group continues to study through different books of the New Testament.
The Story by Max Lucado will be led by Ann Brasher. Ann moved to Foley about a year ago and joined the church last October. She says she has been married since birth. :) Ann and Jack have one son, one daughter, six grands, and six great-grands! Ann has a heart for special needs and has facilitated Bible studies for many years with a curious mind as to who, what where, why, and when. She loves open discussion. In this study, you will see how God goes to great lengths to rescue lost and hurting people. That is what The Story is all about: the story of the Bible, God’s great love affair with humanity. Condensed into 31 accessible chapters, The Story sweeps you into the unfolding progression of Bible characters and events from Genesis to Revelation. The group will meet on Tuesdays from 6:00—8:00 p.m. beginning Sept. 4.
The Reader’s Guide to the Bible: Chronological Reading Plan by George Guthrie will be led by Peggy Ratcliff. Peggy has been married to Shane for 37 years. They are both Baldwin County natives, Auburn graduates, and former Foley teachers. They love spending time in the outdoors, hunting and fishing, studying God’s Word; Peg enjoys sewing/embroidery crafts. This study invites readers into the world of the Bible and offers guidance for walking day-by-day through its pages. The Chronological Reading group will meet at 8:30 a.m. on Mondays and another group (same book) will meet at 6:00 on Monday evenings beginning Sept. 10.
Experiencing God by Henry Blackaby is a book about knowing and doing God’s will. This group will be led by Terry Collings. Terry and Bryce have been married almost 45 years. They have attended FUMC since 2011 and recently joined. They have one daughter, Jennifer, and her family, Russell and Gabe. This study is on a modern classic that has sold millions of copies worldwide. Experiencing God is based on seven Scriptural realities that teach us how to develop a true relationship with the Creator. It will meet at the church on Wednesdays from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. beginning Sept. 12.
The Young Families Small Group will meet from 5:00—7:00 p.m. on Sundays at the church. This group will be doing a video/book study on The Epic of Eden led by Susanna Donald. Susanna is the wife of Pastor Nolan Donald and the mom of three. They have been at Foley UMC for about 2 and a half years. Childcare is available. The group starts with a snack supper at 5 p.m. The Young Families Group welcomes anyone with children still at home, or anyone who might one day have children at home, or anyone who even knows of a child at home (EVERYONE is welcome!).
The Man in the Mirror men’s ministry is led by Shane Ratcliff. Shane is married to Peggy (see above). They have been attending Foley UMC almost two years. The Man in the Mirror group will be exploring a 10-week study on the book How God makes Men by the MIM founder Patrick Morley. The book looks at 10 important men in the Bible and what God asks of them and how they responded with failures and successes. Each week a different man is studied and books are provided. Anyone can join at any time. This group meets at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesdays upstairs in the Spirit Center.
If you aren't sure which group you'd like, we can help you find the right one for you. New groups are formed regularly. Contact John Simonson at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any questions or are interested in leading or joining a small group.
